edX Linux MOOC
I've spent a lot of time in my personal and professional life sitting in front of a computer. Almost all of it has been in front of a machine that runs some version of Windows. In college some of my coursework required me to use a UNIX or Linux PC (hey we all try crazy stuff in college). After that my only experience with Linux came in a few frustrated passes at trying to dual boot with Windows. Each time I would give it a try something wouldn't work or I just wouldn't use Linux. It's with that background that I set off to start the edX LinuxFoundationX LFS101x Introduction to Linux course.
It was a great course. It walks you through everything you need to know about using Linux from installation to advanced user permissions and network settings. Some of it was pretty basic for a person who was Windows savvy and some of it was way too advanced if all you want to do is use Linux as a replacement for Windows. A lot of it was really helpful. Below are my favorite parts of the course.
Linux Structure and Installation
For someone who has worked mostly with Windows partitions and installations it was hard to get my mind around installing Linux. This part of the course was really helpful at providing the needed information on what partitions contained what files, the boot process and different distributions.
Command Line
Oh command line how I love thee. I love making things go faster and more efficient. The command line has become my best friend because of this. Everything in the course after the command line section talks about how to use the graphical user interface and command line to execute the task you are trying to accomplish. It's great!
